Richard, I hope you can join us one Sunday night for #VegRunChat on Twitter. Your story reminds me of mine, and that's all we talk about during the chat - Plantpowered foods to fuel our runs. I see you've unlocked the power of chia. Aren't those seeds the perfect running food!?

Hey Hardy,

Thanks for reading and posting your comment. Yes, a few minutes on Google will confirm the fact that soy is considered good or great by some and bad or downright poisonous by others. From what we've read, and experienced, we fall into the former category as we consider soy to be a good to great part of a healthy and balanced diet.

Whey, of course, is derived from dairy during the production of cheese, and is thus not vegan. Additionally, dairy has its own well proven set of negatives as it relates to health, so I guess it's a bit of a case of buyer beware. Since there is such debate around soy, we do tend to hedge our bets and thus we rely on multiple sources of protein, not only soy. Our protein shake only contains a quarter cup or so of soy milk (the powder itself contains no soy), and our other daily nutritional shake contains no soy either.

Interesting read guys. Something you may or may not know. When I discovered I had colon cancer (melanoma) one of the first things I was told to cut out was soya. Made a huge difference in terms of actually processing food and keeping it down. At that point the surgeon was concerned about actually making it through surgery due to lack of nutrition. Ended up on pure whey powder as it was the best way to get in huge amounts of protein fast. Worked well too. Shortened colon still has a problem dealing with too much soya.

Have a great run!
