Bev, Richard! you guys just rock! thank you so much for all the information! I'll look into it as soon as possible and book our trip soon! (I used to not be subject to seasickness but have experienced it way too many times lately not to bring Dramamine with me; and after reading your adventures, I'll buy more!)

Just by reading you, I'm excited about the prospect of the trip and can't wait to be there! but meanwhile, we'll enjoy Brazil a bit longer! ;-)

Enjoy the Road! Run swift and far!
Cheers!

Hey there Julie. It was a grand adventure - the type that's not too pleasant at the time, but that's awesome to talk about later! We booked through Mama Llena - they own a group of hostels in Cartagena and Panama City and also offer sailing arrangements between the two cities. They work as a booking agent for many of the boats that do the crossing, but don't actually manage the boats themselves. They do provide information on each boat and a summary of feedback about the captain etc., as well as a calendar for each of the sailings to help you decide which boat to choose. Your departure date will narrow down which options are available to you as each boat doesn't sail every week. The website for the Cartagena location is http://www.hostelmamallenacartagena.com/sailboats.html.

We'd recommend that you consider a catamaran instead of a sailboat. The catamaran is a more stable vessel and we heard good reports from other travelers who used this option instead of the sailboat. If you or anyone in your party is vulnerable to sea sickness, definitely take this option as opposed to the single hull sailboat option. And make sure you take Dramamine sea sickness tablets with you just in case (even if you've never been seasick!). We had at least half of our boat sick at one time or another (and some for virtually the entire sailing). Take lots of water and your own snacks and alcohol too - your boat may provide some of these provisions, but it's good to have your own on hand too.

That should help you get started. Let us know if you have any more specific questions and we're happy to help as much as we're able to!

OH MY GOD!!! that's quite an adventure! and we're looking into which sailboat to board when we get to Cartagena to cross over to Panama! I was going to ask you for info and advice... would you give me some? looks like your captain just kept his calm and held on to it all, good job of him (that's his job, anyway, right?) but wooooooowwwww

would you still recommend the same company to us for example, for the trip back?
I can't wait to get there and live a great adventure too (but without the mast problem...)

;-)

Happy Trails, guys! Enjoy the Run!

Only just read this, OMG what an exciting adventure indeed! Stuff going wrong always makes the best stories, provided that you get out safely... I've recently added a second item to the 'times Mark has nearly killed me list' but way way less exciting than the above. Cannot wait to see you in the summer to get lots more stories! N

I can certainly see Bev remaining calm in this situation. That woman is a ROCK. I am glad you had a team dynamic on the boat that helped you all get through this difficult and nerve testing event. Rich that was so well written I was on the edge of my seat, and knowing you made it - because you are in fact present to share the account did not make it any less suspenseful.

Thanks, John - yeah, it was a little on the stressful side there for a while. (I thought you, and especially Judith, might like the Star Trek reference in there... :) )
